Today’s Footless Tights

Footless tights may be the season’s must-have fashion accessory, but unlike a roomy handbag or comfy ballet flats, not every woman can - or should - wear leggings.

There are figure issues, texture and color considerations, and such basics as what to wear them with and where to wear them.

Still, leggings have wide appeal, and with a few guidelines, can look good on women in a range of ages and sizes, proponents say.

“I think this tights craze is just another reflection of how accessory trends come and go,” says Amy Goodman, contributing editor to InStyle magazine. “The variety has increased so much - with all the colors, textures and styles - that it makes hosiery a great deal of fun. For women who have had it on the back shelves, it’s time to get it out and explore again.”

The fact that hosiery is also warm and slimming are two more reasons to recommend it, she says.

“This is a trend that can be worn by everyone from ‘tweens to your groovy grandma,” says hosiery expert Alison Hessert. “It’s all about layering and personalization.

“I’ve been astounded by the people of all shapes and sizes I’ve seen wearing them,” says Hessert, who is spokeswoman for Hue hosiery.

In the 15-block walk between her home and office in New York, Hessert says she typically sees at least five people wearing leggings. “The capri-length ones were really strong for spring and summer - even when it was hot outside - and now the ankle ones look best.”

Hessert, who is in her 30s, says she has been wearing leggings with a bubble dress left over from her college days and completes the outfit with interesting shoes, like blue peep-toe platforms or red patent slingbacks.

The universal way to wear leggings is to slip them on in place of tights under a dress, Hessert says, noting that the jersey dresses and full trapeze or empire-waist styles popular now are good options. Presuming your workplace isn’t too conservative, such an outfit can update your office look and is right at home in more creative environs.

For customers in their teens and 20s who want a “rock-star” look, leggings, a punk T-shirt and denim or corduroy miniskirt are cute, Hessert says. Flats or booties complete the look.

Boomers who want to wear leggings without looking like a flashback from the 1983 movie “Flashdance” can wear black footless tights topped with a thigh-grazing sweater or elongated tunic and flats or ankle boots.

Just avoid wearing a lot of flashy colors and patterns that look like something Cyndi Lauper or Pat Benatar might have worn in the 1980s, says Ashley Baker, associate editor for style at Glamour magazine.

“Black is best,” she says, noting that colors like red make you look like you’re in children’s pajamas and white leggings look nurse-ish. “Anything sheer, striped, printed or patterned is a glamour `don’t,”‘ Baker adds.

Shogren Hosiery to lay off 235

Shogren Hosiery Manufacturing Co. Inc. will restructure its manufacturing operation in Concord, laying off 235 employees.

The company, which has been in Concord for 30 years, has a total of 338 workers.

Shogren, which produces hosiery for women and girls, says the restructuring will address a shift in consumer demand for the company’s nylon tights.

Shogren says it is exploring other sourcing options, shifting its manufacturing model from domestically manufactured products.

The layoffs, which will affect production workers, will occur gradually from January and April.

The company will work with local and state agencies to help those affected. It will also apply for federal benefits from the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which offers job retraining to workers displaced by imports or a shift of production to other countries.

Study Says Strip Clubs Don’t Attract Crime

From AVN Online

SEATTLE - A group of strip clubs have released a study showing that such clubs don’t attract crime.

The study, which is said to have examined police responses over an eight-year period at three Seattle strip clubs, says that there was no evidence to show that they needed more police attention than other businesses, the Seattle Times reported.

The study was part of an effort in support of a referendum placed on the Nov. 7 ballot by several area clubs that aim to overturn the city’s tough ordinance regulating clubs that was approved last year. Under the measure, dancers are required to remain at least four feet away from customers at all times. It also bans the direct tipping of dancers and also requires brighter lighting at clubs.

City officials said they had not seen the study, but nonetheless dismissed it, saying it was biased on behalf of the clubs.

Daniel Linz, a professor of communication and law and society at the University of California, Santa Barbara, conducted the study for the clubs. Linz is said to work for the adult entertainment industry regularly in order to dispute claims that it attracts crime or other negative after effects.

The study examined the clubs Rick’s, in Lake City; the Déjà Vu, near the Pike Place Market, and the Sands club in Ballard. Only Centerfolds, the other licensed club in the city, did no participate in the study.

According to the study, police responded to about 1,200 service calls at a Fred Meyer store on Lake City Way between March 1998 and June 2006, compared to just 375 at Rick’s during the same period.

Most police activities at Rick’s and other clubs involved undercover vice inspections to determine whether dancers were violating rules barring sexually touching patrons. The study said that most of those inspections have been reduced over the last few years due to budget cuts and by shifting members of the vice unit to other areas such as liquor inspections and street prostitution.

The study contends that such decline in inspections shows that law enforcement does not view strip club activities as a threat to public safety.

But Assistant Police Chief Linda Pierce said that the number of police calls does not mean strip clubs are any safer than other businesses, adding that she felt that strip club patrons are unlikely to call police if they see a crime take place in a club.

Police said they frequently cite dancers for violating the city’s sexual contact rules with customers when undercover officers are sent to clubs. The city has suspended the licenses of 114 dancers for various rules violations since 2002, of which 26 were reversed on appeals, the city’s licensing office said.

Where can I buy the perfect pair of grey tights?

Q: Where can I buy the perfect pair of grey tights? Towards the end of last winter I noticed that grey was the new black as far as tights were concerned, and I tried to buy a pair. I went to all the usual outlets but no luck - I wanted a pale, schoolgirl grey. Eventually I found just what I was looking for - in M&S. Gorgeous, thick-ribbed wool tights in the right grey. Sadly they were part of the school uniform range.. Where can I buy grey tights…

A Herstory of Hosiery

I still remember the day I got my first pair. They were sheer, silky to touch, and held up by a contraption that must have been first cousin to the chastity belt.

They were, of course, nylon stockings. [...]

It got a little better after pantyhose were invented.
That is, if you enjoyed tugging two tubes of nylon up from your toes to your belly button, only to discover that somehow in the process you had managed to twist your left stocking so that its toe section now stuck out from your heel. [...]

Sometime after pantyhose, thigh-high hose became popular. These were a decided improvement — as long as you didn’t mind your upper thighs being gripped in a tourniquetlike vise for 11 hours a day.

They were only slightly cooler than pantyhose — a fact that re-registered in my brain at the beginning of every summer.

Lawyer Wears Pantyhose

Lawyer Rob Moodie sashayed into the High Court in Wellington yesterday in navy blue skirt and black pantyhose – to bring contempt proceedings against two other lawyers.

Yesterday’s issue was one of the spin-offs from the Berryman saga – the long-running legal wrangle over culpability after bee keeper Ken Richards died in 1994 when an army-built bridge collapsed on Keith and Margaret Berryman’s King Country farm.

The Berrymans have been fighting to clear their name ever since.

Dr Moodie stopped representing the couple after he was accused of contempt of court after publishing a suppressed report, the Butcher Report, on the Internet.

Dr Moodie began wearing women’s garments at a hearing last month reportedly in protest against the “old boys’ network” that he said ran the judiciary.

Yesterday he wore a navy blue calf-length skirt and suit jacket, a blue and red print blouse, a small brooch, a bracelet, black pantyhose and a girl’s plastic watch.
